About Bactrim DS:
Bactrim DS, known by its generic name as Trimethoprim or Sulfamethoxazole is a drug that is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Though this drug is primarily used in the treatment of UTIs, it can also be used in the treatment of other bacterial infections as well as traveler’s diarrhea and bronchitis. This antibiotic can also work selectively on viral infections and not on the ones such as the virus that causes flu.
How to use Bactrim DS
This drug should only be used when the infection of the urinary tract by bacteria has been properly established. This is because unnecessary usage of the drug may lead to the bacteria developing resistance to the drug. For less complicated cases of UTIs, only a single and efficient drug should be used as the use of a combination of anti-bacterial agents is unnecessary for such conditions.
Bactrim DS Dosage
For an adult treating UTIs, the typical dosage is one tablet of Trimethoprim every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. The doctor may, however, prescribe a double strength dosage of 2 tablets for the same amount of time if your infection is more complicated. For children who are two months or older, the normal prescription is 40mg/kg. However, children who are less than two months old should not be prescribed for this drug because of its side effects. Different levels of UTI infections require different dosages and therefore the dosage of each patient is unique and should not be shared.
Bactrim DS Side Effects
While using the drug, here are the most common side effects that you are likely to experience:
- Loss of appetite
If these symptoms persist or worsen, you should seek your doctor’s attention immediately. In some cases, you may also experience severe side effects such as moodiness, muscle weakness, blood in the urine, and abrupt change in urine color, drowsiness and known signs of low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). If these occur, you should inform your doctor immediately. Other side effects may include: headaches, seizures and irregular heartbeats. Not all have been mentioned and thus, if you experience any symptom that is abnormal, you can ask your doctor about it.
Bactrim DS Precautions
Sulfamethoxazole is reactive to other drugs and may worsen some medical conditions. You should therefore inform your doctor if you have any allergies to sulfa drugs before you commence your medication. This drug also contains some inactive ingredients that may act as allergens.
If you have any medical history on blood disorders, vitamin deficiencies, kidney diseases, reduced bone marrow or asthma, you should talk to your doctor to confirm whether you can go on with the medication or not. This drug may also affect your blood sugar levels and have profound effects on pre-existing medical conditions. You should therefore ensure that you have regular check-ups to monitor your progress and make any adjustments to your dosage.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, you should also inform your doctor accordingly. The physician should also inform you about the possible risks that you may face during the treatment and how to curb them when they occur.
